Yep. First gens, and six cylinder only. Very very rare, but do an AutoTrader search and you'll find five or six.

I once drove one. The stick is nice; eventually you get used to the size. The MOST ridiculous bit is the fact that, when you're done with it, you have to re-sell it.

Yeah I read it was the first gen that had it (rare). I haven't seen one but have read about it. It may have only been an option with the 3.0L straight six.

Anyone who had the first gen X5 with the MT was lucky since BMW had their infamous premature AT failures around 2000-2003.

My sister had a 2001 323i she bought used that had the AT fail around 60K miles. And a guy at my work has a really clean E39 5 series that has the AT. Every day he drives the car he lives in fear of the AT failing.

My wife's DD - 3.0-liter '04 X3 six-speed.

They are really great to drive if you think of them as tall station wagons. Not fast but certainly not slow. I would think the extra weight of the X5 would take a bit away from it though.

That said I didn't realize at the time that Cayennes were floating around with manuals. I don't know but I like to imagine that the few people who would order such a combo like to keep them forever and ever... obviously not the case for our family hauler though.

I had a 2001 X5 3.0 for 4 years. It had the AT though. It definitely wasn't slow. The inline six revved like crazy when needed to zip the vehicle around. Your X3 is probably feels really quick since it's lighter.

It definitely was like a tall station wagon. I've heard that the first X5 was very closely related to the E39 5 Series. I really liked how my car drove.

Only reason I sold it was reliability issues. I purchased it CPO and sold it before the extended warranty ran out. I had a lot of weird glitches. They didn't strand me (luckily) but they scared me out of keeping the car. Hopefully your 2004 X3 has been very reliable.

So far so good reliability-wise (and thanks for the kind thoughts). I had to change the valve cover gasket but other than that we're at 60k with no major issues and only oil changes, but there are some gremlins running around in there - noisy AC compressor tensioner, mysterious, intermittent, super-low-rate coolant leak and a $5 o-ring underneath the oil filter housing that supposedly requires alternator removal (!!!) to access... but it's not so bad to work on and actually has several tricks built in to help prevent ham-fisted mechanics making problems worse - a fact I greatly appreciate after having some 'sensitive' machines (looking at you Triumph).

The X3 and X5 are apparently very, very similar underpinnings-wise with their sedan cousins. I like ours enough that I like to tell myself I'll drop in a 3.5l turbodiesel 6 when the S52 (?) gives up the ghost... I do enjoy the revvy six even in this application but td tq would be great fun with some silly-large tires offroad :).

The first gen X5 did have a manual version I have a auto but when looking in the owners manual there was a manual transmission guide in it. when I was looking for a R129 300sl-24 I was trying to find a very rare manual version... all R129s were automatics but a few were made manual which only were the I6s... every owner who had one refused to sell it to me... so I settled for a automatic which wasn't a mistake.. I think I would of enjoyed either one of them..

You're welcome, glad you've had no major issues. It wouldn't be a BMW if it didn't have minor gremlins ;) And it wouldn't be a German car if there wasn't at least one or two odd situations where you have to remove a part (or lots of parts) to make a simple repair. Did you see the post on Oppo the other day about the Audi R8? You have to take the engine out to replace an AC component. Ouch...

Hopefully your engine will last so long that you'll never need to replace it. Most bimmer engines last a long time if you maintain them.

I do like how the X series shares so much with the sedan cousins. I even like the X1. It would be big enough for me if I needed a CUV/SUV. It would be pretty peppy even with the turbo 2.0L I4.
